IsraelElex Israel Election 2019 Weekly Roundup

Weekly Roundup | December 8

Last week again saw little progress as MK’s tried to prevent another election. They have until 11.59 on Wednesday night to present a candidate to be tasked with forming the government.

Benny Gantz and Benjamin Netanyahu once again met as have their negotiating teams. Likud has said that Netanyahu offered creative solutions to ensure that no one can violate the agreement but Blue and White has not been willing to compromise on anything. Blue and White insist that Netanyahu wants another election and is doing all he can to gain immunity.

Netanyahu has dropped his insistence on serving two years in a unity government and has agreed to serve six months instead. Blue and White have not taken Netanyahu’s offer seriously.

Avigdor Liberman has once again been confusing. The Yisrael Beiteinu leader began the week saying that he would nominate both Netanyahu and Gantz to form a government before retracting this offer. Liberman has said that a 3rd election is inevitable before saying that he still thinks it can be avoided.

Liberman has also continued to suggest that he could return to the right-wing bloc to prevent another election.

Labor-Gesher MK has announced that he is seeking to present Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein as a Prime Minister candidate.

Ahead of tonight’s Likud central committee meeting a motion to call for a party leadership election will not be discussed. The reason given is that one should not be held until after we know if we are going to a new election.

If a new election is held the Central Elections Committee has said that they need at least 75 days to prepare for it, there have been various proposals to shorten the length of time needed for another election. Currently, the law indicates that if an election is automatically triggered it must be held on the Tuesday between 84-90 days from being triggered.

The Israel Business Organizations, an umbrella group of private sector Israeli businesses has called for the third election (assuming it happens) to not be a day off as many businesses cannot afford to payout another paid holiday.

Netanyahu is reportedly once again considering a direct election for Prime Minister between himself and Benny Gantz.

Gantz has responded by vowing to beat Netanyahu in such a situation.

Democratic Union MK and co-leader Stav Shaffir has been working to unite the party with Labor in the case of another election.

The President is reportedly considering the idea of pardoning Netanyahu if he retires from politics and accepts his charges, Netanyahu has so far refused all suggestions of a plea bargain.

A Knesset advisor has said the appointment of Interim Defense Minister Naftali Bennet was illegal as Netanyahu had not stepped down when he appointed Bennet.
